About Leap Years
Leap years are necessary to keep our calendar in alignment with Earth’s revolutions around the Sun. It takes Earth approximately 365.242189 days to orbit the Sun, so without leap years, our calendar would drift by about 6 hours each year.
Our calculator follows the official Gregorian calendar rules established in 1582:
- A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4
- But not if it is divisible by 100, unless it is also divisible by 400
This means that 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.
